Safer Alternatives in Cleanup Solvents for Lithographic Printing

Safer Alternatives in Cleanup Solvents for Lithographic Printing - Webinar
Presenter: Dr. Katy Wolf, director of the Institute for Research and Technical Assistance (IRTA)
Date: Thursday, July 17th
Time: 10 - 11:30 AM (Pacific Time)
There are thousands of lithographic printers in the U.S., most of them small businesses. Emissions of cleanup solvents used to clean rollers and blankets are very high, much higher than emissions of the solvents used in the inks. Most of the cleanup solvents used in the industry are VOCs and many of them are also toxic. This presentation will focus on the results of projects that were conducted in the Los Angeles area over the last few years by the Institute for Research and Technical Assistance (IRTA), a nonprofit organization. In these projects, IRTA worked with 21 lithographic printing facilities to identify, develop, test and demonstrate low-VOC, low toxicity alternative cleanup materials. IRTA found and demonstrated water-based, acetone based and soy based cleaning alternatives that were effective. The South Coast Air Quality Management District adopted a VOC regulation that became effective January 1, 2008 based on the results of the IRTA projects.

Chemical Policy 101 and the Issues Behind Identifying Safer Chemical Alternatives

Chemical Policy 101 and the Issues Behind Identifying Safer Chemical Alternatives - Webinar
Presenters: Ken Zarker, Washington Department of Ecology
Date: Friday, June 20th
Time: 9:30-11:00 AM (Pacific Time)
Ken Zarker from the WA Department of Ecology will begin the presentation with an overview of national policies regarding chemicals used in everyday products and their risks. He will also discuss international policies such as the EUs REACH program and the importance of educating regional businesses who export to the EU.
In 2007 the State of California launched the California Green Chemistry Initiative; part of this process was creating a public process to fill information and safety gaps about chemicals, developing overall policy goals, and finally, identifying and recommending policy options. Don Owens, Green Chemistry Initiative Coordinators, presentation will focus on the current status of the Initiative and will give us an inside look on what issues they intend to address in the future.
Green Chemistry is a strategy to reduce the use of toxic substances so that they do not harm the public or contaminate the environment. It is a sharp departure from managing industrial wastes by disposal or incineration. Green Chemistry is a way to make goods and engineer processes using less toxic materials, less energy, and less waste. Renewable feedstocks, recycling, sustainability, and other life-cycle attributes are incorporated at the design stage. This cradle-to-cradle approach of Green Chemistry means fewer hazardous substances along with improved air quality, cleaner drinking water, and a safer workplace.

Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) Workshop
|
June 4,2008 until June 4, 2008 |
|
"What Happens after Top-Screen? Living with the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards."
Is your facility in compliance with CFATS? Some 5-8,000 industrial facilities in the US will soon find out if they are going to be regulated under the newly adopted Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS), promulgated by the US Department of Homeland Security in late 2007. Many of these facilities will face new security requirements as a result.
This workshop will provide you with practical knowledge about the new CFATS regulation, and how to integrate your plant's security assistance and planning -- mandated for many facilities under these new regulations -- with your process safety and regulatory compliance efforts. Hosted by The University of Texas at Arlington's Division for Enterprise Development, in cooperation with ChemAlliance, The Texas Chemical Council, and the East Harris County Manufacturers Association, come to this one-day workshop and find out how your facility can prepare to comply with CFATS.

A Wall Street View of Lean Transformation
|
December 18,2007 until December 18, 2007 |
|
A free webinar presented by the Lean Enterprise Institute. Held on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 1:00 PM Eastern Time.
Cliff Ransom, an experienced institutional investor who was bitten by the "lean bug" over fifteen years ago, explores the intersection of lean practices and stock market valuation. His research work for institutional investors stresses the significant potential business impact of successful lean implementations. His central thesis is that while lean is often espoused because it reduces waste, cycle time, and floor space and enhances quality, safety and delivery time (which it does), the most powerful drivers are customer intimacy, capital avoidance, improved valuation, and the development of a self-sustaining culture of continuous improvement, employee empowerment, and respect for employees.

US DOE's Best Practices: Fan System Assessment Training
|
December 5,2007 until December 5, 2007 |
|
From shop ventilation to material handling to boiler applications, motor-driven fans are essential and are widely used in industrial manufacturing. Industrial plants could save 5 to 15 percent fan system energy use through equipment upgrades, 20 to 50 percent through speed control in variable flow, and 5 to 25 percent through optimal system design. Attendees at this program will learn to identify and take advantage of the many opportunities to save energy and reduce costs, and improve the performance of their fan systems.
If you are a plant engineer or you are involved in the operation and maintenance of fan systems in your plant, consider attending this session to help you better manage the fan systems in your plant.
The training helps you:
1) Determine the cost of operating fans in your facility
2) Understand the interaction between the fan curve and the system curve
3) Analyze the optimization potential of fan systems
4) Create an action plan to improve fan system efficiency and reliability in your plant.
This workshop will be held from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM on December 5, 2007 at the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center, Automation and Robotics Research Institute, 7300 Jack Newell Blvd South, Fort Worth, Tx 76118.

Louisiana Water Quality Conference: Watershed Issues 2007
|
October 29,2007 until October 31, 2007 |
|
The conference will focus on nonpoint source pollution control and watershed management. Nonpoint source pollution
is a type of water pollution that is not generated from a distinct place, such as a discharge pipe or sewage treatment
plant. It is generated during rainfall events. As the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made
pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters, and even our underground sources of
drinking water. According to EPA, states have reported that nonpoint source pollution is the leading remaining cause of
water quality problems.
The conference will offer a boat trip down Vermilion River, informative sessions, lunch and a banquet. For more
information contact Alicia Walsh, DEQ environmental scientist at 225-219-3487 or Dr. Durga Pudel, with ULL at 337-482-6163. For more information and to register, visit www.deq.louisiana.gov/portal/tabid/69/Default.aspx.

INDUSTRIAL WASTE HEAT ROCOVERY ROUNDTABLE
|
August 15,2007 until August 15, 2007 |
|
2-4 pm
Texas Industries of the Future and the Industrial Safety Training Council invites you to participate in a Roundtable on Waste Heat Recovery. The purpose of the Roundtable is to increase participants understanding of available options and challenges in one area of energy management, by allowing in-depth exploration of the topic with peers and an energy management expert. Energy assessments and audits frequently identify opportunities for waste heat recovery, but in many cases the high costs of engineering and construction render these projects uneconomical. These are the issues that plant engineers wrestle with as they seek to recover waste heat. This Roundtable focuses on the innovative uses and technologies for recovery of waste heat in the Gulf Coast process industries.
