Following are a set of P2 options you may wish to implement. No option is perfect for everyone, but sometimes options that have worked at one facility can work at yours. They might also serve as inspiration.

Reviewed Printing Options

Options below have reviewed by pollution prevention specialists. They are commonly recommended and implemented for facilities.

Implementation of operational and work practice ch
Implement changes to extend chemical bath life, reduce the quantity of chemicals used, and reduce wastewater generation

Use Chemical Substitutes for photographic films (u
A non-silver substitute may be an option.

Use Electronic Imaging that has Editing Capabiliti
Use electronic imaging to reduce multiple steps involved in photodeveloping

Implement a Chemical Inventory Program
Track inventory to utilize photodeveloping chemicals, paper, and film before their expiration.

Change Operational and Work Practices
Implement changes to reduce chemical use in spent chemical and heavy metal recovery and recycling. Some possible steps towards this goal include: reducing chemical bath contamination, counter current washing, filtrating screen making wastewaters to remove particulates, recycling plates and plate materials, or returning plate materials to the manufacturer or to a metal recoverer.

Use Alternative Chemicals
Eliminate the need for pretreatment if wastewaters are being discharged into the sewer by using water-developed lithographic plates and film instead of solvents in processing.

Substitute Iron-EDTA bleaches for ferrocyanide ble
This modification may eliminate paticultar treatments and disposal requirements

Use a washless processing system
Implementing this technology is expensive, but will reduce wastewater by as much as 97%

Improve Housekeeping and Operating Practices
Cover reservoirs and containers, schedule jobs according to increasing darkness of ink color, use wipes as many times as possible, and control inventory to collectively minimize solvent losses from inks and cleaning solutions.

Substitute Diaphragm Pumps for Mechanical Vane Pum
To reduce ink vaporization as diaphragm pumps to not need to heat ink as much as mechanical vane pumps do.

Recycle waste solvents
on-site or off-site, segregating solvents might afford reuse (for equipment cleaning or ink thinning)

Recycle certain waste inks when possible

Recycle product rejects when possible

Use Alternative Ink and Cleaning Products with red
Substitute solvent based inks with vegetable oil or water based inks where applicable. Use low VOC or VOC-free cleaning solutions. A new printing system that features an oil-based lithographic ink that can be converted to a water-soluble state is currently available, allowing a water-based blanket wash to be used.

Eliminate the use of chromium-containing fountain

Install automatic ink levelers
These will help to keep ink conditions optimal.

Use automatic cleaning equipment which can often b
Typically, lower volumes of cleaning formulations are applied with such cleaning equipment, air contact, and thus volitalization, is reduced, and most are designed to include recycling and reuse of cleaning solutions

Minimizing finished product rejects by automating

Using fountain coolers to reduce evaporation from

Collecting and reclaiming recyclable materials

Replacing VOC adhesives with water soluble adhesiv
(binding adhesives that are not water soluble may interfere with later recycling), hot-melt adhesives, or mechanical methods in building operations.

Unreviewed Options, Use with CautionUnreviewed Printing Options

Options below have not been reviewed by pollution prevention specialists. They are commonly recommended and implemented for facilities.

To install energy efficient lighting retrofits
To install energy efficient lighting retrofits, new energy efficient lighting fixtures, sockets, electronic ballasts, specular reflectors and sensors. This project is the result of a corporate initiative for cost savings. A site survey has been conducted at the plant. With a renegotiated electrical contract, which will reduce our energy consumption by 25% in 2008, this project will add an additional $24M annually in energy savings.

Recycling materials
Recycle inks, solvents. Reduce use to environmental friendly chemicals

Reduce material usage
Efficient scheduling to reduce clean up

Filter Fountain Solution
Install filtration on fountain solution mixing tanks to remove contaminants.

Laser Logo
This option would replace the lead based ink that is currently used with a laser. This would eliminate or greatly reduce the amount of ink that is used

MEK-based Ink Jet Printing
Investigate elimination of MEK based ink jet materials and switch to aqueous based ink jet materials for use in product and packaging identification processes.
