Following are a set of P2 options you may wish to implement. No option is perfect for everyone, but sometimes options that have worked at one facility can work at yours. They might also serve as inspiration.

Unreviewed Options, Use with CautionUnreviewed Animal Cage Cleaning Options

Options below have not been reviewed by pollution prevention specialists. They are commonly recommended and implemented for facilities.

Compost Wood Chips from Animal Cages
Animal cage clean-outs involve running the waste wood chips through a shredder/disposal that then discharges the slurry to the sanitary sewer as waste water. Recycling this bedding as compost that could be used by the Grounds Department would reduce wastewater and reduce the cost normally spent on fertilizer.

Start a Composting Project
Composting will reduce the reliance on purchased products by the Grounds Department. Adding animal bedding (wood chips) to that compost will recycle the animal bedding rather than disposing of it as waste.
