Following are a set of P2 options you may wish to implement. No option is perfect for everyone, but sometimes options that have worked at one facility can work at yours. They might also serve as inspiration. |
Reviewed Metal Fabrication OptionsOptions below have reviewed by pollution prevention specialists. They are commonly recommended and implemented for facilities. |
|
Use logical order for processes
Schedule processes that use different oil types in a logical order to reduce the frequency of cleanouts.
Streamline Oil Types for Different Processes
Streamline oil types used for machining, turning, lathing to reduce frequency of cleanouts and volume of leftover and mixed waste.
Designate Pipes and Lines
Designate pipes and lines for particular metals or processes requiring same oil to reduce frequency of cleanouts.
Use a Centrifuge and Biocides
Using a centrifuge and biocides results in extended coolant life, reduction of waste coolant generation, and saved money on coolant purchases and disposal expenses.
Install a Second High Speed Centrifuge
Install a second high speed centrifuge on existing single high speed centrifuge system to increase recovery efficiency.
Install a Chip Ringer | |
Install a chip ringer to recoup surplus coolant on aluminum chips.
Use a Coolant Analyzer | |
Use a coolant analyzer to manage coolant quality.
Use an Ultra Filtration System
Use an ultra filtration system in order to separate soluble oils from wastewater stream.
Use Disk or Belt Skimmers
Use disk or belt skimmers in order to extend coolant life and remove oil from machine coolants to reduce the frequency of coolant disposals.
Substitute Hot Lime Bath or Borax Soap for Oil
Substitute hot lime bath or borax soap for oil used solely for lubrication in cold forming or other processes.
Use a Stamping Lubricant
Use a stamping lubricant that can continue to be on the piece until the annealing process, where it is burned to eliminate the need for hazardous degreasing solvents and alkali cleaners.
Segregate Used Oils if Filtration or Reclamation o
Segregate used oils if filtration or reclamation of oil is required before reuse to prevent the mixing of wastes.
Segregate Metal Dust or Scrap by Type
Segregate metal dust and scrap by type in order to improve the metals resale value.
Recycle Oil from Cutting/Machining Operations
Often oil does not need to be treated before being suitable for recycling.
Centrifuge Oil for Reuse
Centrifuge oil scrap mixtures to capture oil for reuse.
Use Continuous Flow Treatment System
Use a continuous flow treatment system to separate and reuse aluminum chemical milling solutions.
Use a Settling Tank and Coalescing Unit
Use a settling tank and coalescing unit to recover metal-working fluids.
Solvent Management | |
Require employees to acquire solvents from their shop foremen.
Reuse Waste Solvents | |
Reuse waste solvents from cleaner operations in down-stream machines shop-type processes.
Only Degrease Parts as Needed
Only degrease the parts that require degreasing as opposed to degreasing all parts
Use Countercurrent Solvent Cleaning
Use countercurrent solvent cleaning |

||
Scrap Reduction | ||
Reduce amount of scrap generated by reduction of off-specification products, enhanced use of products, etc.
Outsourcing of non-essential sheet metal
Carrier Corporation generates scrap metal (copper, aluminum, and steel) from the fabrication processes throughout the Carrier Plant. Fabrication includes the following processes. ·Heavy Presses ·Brake Presses ·Fin Presses ·Cutoff Shears ·Uncoilers and Straighteners ·Maintenance and Tool & Die operations. Our current strategy is to continue with the outsourcing of non-essential sheet metal fabrication throughout the plant. Educate the hourly and salary workforce and explain to them the adverse factors of the waste that is being generated from the fabrication process. Educate all employees of the benefits from recycling the metal products we use and ask them to participate. Urge employees for suggestions to help minimize waste generation in their work areas and all other areas of the plant.
Lead Vendor Certification
Develop vendor certification to ensure purchased scrap contains only trace amounts of lead. |
