Following are a set of P2 options you may wish to implement. No option is perfect for everyone, but sometimes options that have worked at one facility can work at yours. They might also serve as inspiration.

Reviewed Tank Washing Options

Options below have reviewed by pollution prevention specialists. They are commonly recommended and implemented for facilities.

 
Reduce Number of Clean Outs
Minimize the number of tank cleanouts and monitor total organic carbons (TOC) on rinse waters to reduce the amount of water produced.
 
Reuse of Tank Washout
Save solvent used for washing out paint mixing tanks reuse in new batches.

Unreviewed Options, Use with CautionUnreviewed Tank Washing Options

Options below have not been reviewed by pollution prevention specialists. They are commonly recommended and implemented for facilities.

 
Recycling rubber scrap
Rubber scrap that is cleaned out of tanks would be recycled instead of sent to the landfill.
 
Storm water
Use clean stormwater as rinseate for tanks.
 
Waste-to- Product
Crumbs of rubber from the process and plant clean up materials that were wastes are now being used as a raw materials in low-end rubber products.
 
Recycle and Reuse
ATS reuses the interior cleaning chemicals continuously by re-circulating and re-heating material drained from the containers.
 
Biodegradable Cleaner/Degreaser
A liquid, water soluble, biodegradable concentrate used for cleaning.
