Following are a set of P2 options you may wish to implement. No option is perfect for everyone, but sometimes options that have worked at one facility can work at yours. They might also serve as inspiration.

Reviewed Coating-Employee Practices Options

Options below have reviewed by pollution prevention specialists. They are commonly recommended and implemented for facilities.

Spray gun handling training
Train employees on proper spraying techniques. Spray gun handling is a critical element of optimizing the process. Proper handling techniques will minimize off-spray and reduce wet surface area surrounding the product. Make sure all employees know the following: The spray gun should be held as close to the surface as possible (6-8 inches is optimal), in consideration of the material output, fan pattern, and size and arrangement of the mold. Minimize leading and trailing edges. Sometimes the operator must start spraying just before the part passes, and ceases just after the part passes. This “leading edge” ensures coating uniformity. To reduce overspray, operators should reduce the distance between the point of triggering and the edge of the target. The fan pattern intercept angle should be maintained as close to perpendicular to the mold surface as possible. The perimeter of the objects should be sprayed as accurately as possible, avoiding spraying off the edge to the greatest extent possible. The spray gun should be adjusted to the lowest possible pressure that produces an acceptable fan pattern.

Unreviewed Options, Use with CautionUnreviewed Coating-Employee Practices Options

Options below have not been reviewed by pollution prevention specialists. They are commonly recommended and implemented for facilities.

New Graco paint system
A computerized system that greatly reduces our paint usage.

Lean Training
Provide adequate training to optimize process

Hold the spray gun close to the surface
Hold the spray gun 6-8 inches in consideration of material, outp8ut, fan pattern.

Use of value pumps to reduce waste
Using value pumps allows for hardner to be added at end of process thus reducing waste.

Better painter training
Painters trained on techniques to reduce waste paint and use of xylene and thinner.

Leadman for paint shop
Responsible for ensuring that reduction measures are carried out.
