Description:

Fluorescent lamps used at the facility were considered hazardous waste when spent. An alternative nonhazardous fluorescent lamp, manufactured by Phillips was tested and recommended for purchase by the Facility Resource Management Team. Hazardous waste generation was reduced as a result of lamp replacement.

P2 Application:

The Philips low mercury lamp was manufactured in response to industry requiring a less hazardous alternative to the standard fluorescent lamps.

Environmental Benefits:

By requiring the purchase of nonhazardous, low mercury, fluorescent lamps, 3,648 pounds of hazardous waste per year from fluorescent lamps are eliminated.

The change to low mercury fluorescent lamps saves an estimated $5,820 per year with a 0.1 year payback.
