DuPont's NordelTM hydrocarbon rubber is polymerized in hexane, a volatile organic compound (VOC), solvent. The rubber is separated from the solvent using multiple steps of heating and mechanical drying. This technology has been effective in producing dry product, but has not been as effective for solvent recovery. The project objectives were to significantly reduce hexane emissions without impairing process output or product quality. Over a period of seven (7) months, the source reduction strategy was developed and process optimization tests were performed. These tests demonstrated significantly increased hexane recovery but also resulted in equipment fouling and increased downtime. Another five (5) months were necessary to make process and equipment changes needed to eliminate the unscheduled/recurrent downtime resulting from the solvent recovery optimization changes. These efforts were spearheaded by five (5) Technical/Environmental professionals and involved additional training for and/or participation by operating, Design and Maintenance personnel.

P2 Application:

The technology used to reduce emissions was not innovative, however the application to this process required extensive testing and creative solutions and equipment modifications to sustain product quality and production capability.

Environmental Benefits:

This project achieved a significant and sustainable reduction in the release of VOC to the atmosphere. It demonstrated a reduction in hexan emissions of 1,000-1,500 Tons/yr (depending on production volume).
