Description:

Texas Eastman uses a chloride solution as a catalyst to produce acetadehyde. A constant stream of HCl is required to maintain the catalyst's chloride ion concentration. Chloride is lost to chlorinated by-products that are partially recovered by oxidation back to HCl. By optimizing the system more chlorinated by-products are returned to the system decreasing waste and reducing the need for fresh HCl.

P2 Application:

To optimize the system the following steps were taken. Automated controllers were installed on the chlorinated by-product distillation column. The amount of excess air used for producing HCl was lowered. Finally, the combustion temperature of the chlorinated by-product oxidizer was lowered.

Environmental Benefits:

The optimization reduced the amount chlorinated by-product sent to incineration by 690,000 pounds a year.
